I received this email the other day. It is going around. If you receive one of these, don't be fooled! They will take everything you have. Upon receipt, you should contact the feds and alert them to this scam.

DEAR AMERICAN:

I NEED TO ASK YOU TO SUPPORT AN URGENT SECRET BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP WITH A TRANSFER OF FUNDS OF GREAT MAGNITUDE.

I AM MINISTRY OF THE TREASURY OF THE REPUBLIC OF AMERICA. MY COUNTRY HAS HAD CRISIS THAT HAS CAUSED THE NEED FOR LARGE TRANSFER OF FUNDS OF 700 BILLION DOLLARS US. IF YOU WOULD ASSIST ME IN THIS TRANSFER, IT WOULD BE MOST PROFITABLE TO YOU.

I AM WORKING WITH MR. PHIL GRAM, LOBBYIST FOR UBS, WHO WILL BE MY REPLACEMENT AS MINISTRY OF THE TREASURY IN JANUARY. AS A SENATOR, YOU MAY KNOW HIM AS THE LEADER OF THE AMERICAN BANKING DEREGULATION MOVEMENT IN THE 1990S. THIS TRANSACTIN IS 100% SAFE.

THIS IS A MATTER OF GREAT URGENCY. WE NEED A BLANK CHECK. WE NEED THE FUNDS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. WE CANNOT DIRECTLY TRANSFER THESE FUNDS IN THE NAMES OF OUR CLOSE FRIENDS BECAUSE WE ARE CONSTANTLY UNDER SURVEILLANCE. MY FAMILY LAWYER ADVISED ME THATI SHOULD LOOK FOR A RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY PERSON WHO WILL ACT AS A NEXT OF KIN SO THE FUNDS CAN BE TRANSFERRED.

PLEASE REPLY WITH ALL OF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, IRA AND COLLEGE FUND ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND THOSE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO WALLSTREETBAILOUT@TREASURY.GOV SO THAT WE MAY TRANSFER YOUR COMMISSION FOR THIS TRANSACTION. AFTER I RECEIVE THAT INFORMATION,I WILL RESPOND WITH DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT SAFEGUARDS THAT WILL BE USED TO PROTECT THE FUNDS.

YOURS FAITHFULLY,

MINISTER OF TREASURY PAULSON

Don't worry, I'm not going to fall into the crass habit not posting for months then only posting surveys. I'll have a real post before I do another one of these...Collapse )

I grabbed this off Patton Oswalt's website. It's genius.

On June 18th I'm giving the commencement address at my old high school. They're located twenty minutes outside of Washington, D.C. They've got access to museum docents, Senators, Congressmen, political reporters and The Greaseman. But despite this deep pool of wisdom to draw from, they thought, "Let's get that fat dude who tells dick jokes to drunks."

The rest: I recommend you read on...Collapse )

Wedding?

I received a very strange and exciting email today. No, it wasn't from a Mexicorn duke who wants to slobber on my pens (great video, G-Rated), it was from an old friend of mine from my Island days. She and her long term boyfriend are now engaged and want me to officiate in the wedding ceremony. They want to represent both of their cultural backgrounds, Jewish and Irish, in the cermony, and are asking me to lead up the Irish side. Shame and guilt jokes not withstanding, I think this is a wonderful idea. Of course, now I'm on the hook to come up with Celtic wedding traditions. Gaelic, poetry, and hand-binding is pretty much the skeleton they're leaning towards, so if anyone has any ideas, recommendations, resources I am all ears.

I feel kind of goofy thinking about this. I'm gonna be up there with a Rabbi, a spiritual leader who has been wedding people for years. When I imagine myself marrying my friends in a Celtic/Jewish ceremony, I keep picturing myself with a big bushy beard and an ascetic white robe. WTF, eh? I sure don't want to don a priest's outfit, and I don't want to look like a ren-faire reject, either, so what do I where? Does anyone who isn't in the SCA have Celtic weddings? I'm trying to maintain ancient tradition without being a kitschy joke and I'm a little over my head. Really, attire is the least of my worries. What do I say that uptight-Seattlite Jews and ex-military Texans will both respect? Fortunately, I have somewhere in the neighborhood of two years to figure this out.

Memorial for Patrick Hill

Sorry to LJ post this.  I don't have numbers or email for some of you, so I'm gonna do this impersonally.

I just found out the memorial service for Patrick Hill will be held at the Evergreen Longhouse at 6 pm tomorrow, July 2nd.  I wish this wasn't such short notice, but that's how it goes sometimes.  I hope to see some of you out-of-towners there.  It's been a while.

Oh wow... This is Livejournal!  I haven't been in here in ages!  Wow, look at all my friends pages!  What lovely photos they have!  And there's even a link to the cutest baby panda there ever was!

Well, I got internets again.  After a year of the worst dial-up connection since '93, I am finally live.  Well, live is probably the wrong term for online, but fuck it.  I'm just glad to be back.  So they invented this cool thing called YouTube while I was gone.  It has stupid awesome videos from people with too little taste and too much bandwidth.  I found a wonderful site where I can watch all the TV shows I can't get without a television.  Sidereel.com.  That was supposed to be a link, but apparently the tube to that internet is clogged.  Uh...let's see, porn's a lot more fun when it's not ASCII based.  Yeah, high speed is cool.

What's been going on since I last posted...

I moved into a house on Puget last July, got a business license in August, worked in the marinas through September, got a temp job stacking doors in November.  I washed dishes at Ben Moore's in December.  Took a class for certification to work on vessels in foreign waters.  Lived off saving until April.  Came out of my depression when the sun finally broke through the endless winter in May.  And now I'm the work lead for the boat detailing company and get paid bank.  It's sweet.  Now, if I can just stop spending money.  The internet should help me stay home more often.

Oh and I got a new old car.  This one's a 1980 Ford Fiesta Mk1.  It's silver with a blue racing stripe.  Pictures are forthcoming.  I'm restoring it.  I lucked upon my old Fiesta, which is still in the same spot it was parked five years ago when I gave it to Rat.  Thank you every lazy person who ever lived at the Swamp Haus.  That includes me.  I'm so glad to have a parts car.  Now I have turn signals.  I'll come back to this topic another time.  I have to go bowling!

I received this message from Sean.  Here's a quick update on Doranne.  I hope this helps anyone who was wondering.

P.S. Sean wants me to make clear that all the facts are not in, this is just the best info she has right now.  I'll update if I find out more.

Hi Éamon,
I sent out a message to the listserve in hopes that it would get to the people still using those old e-mails! Here is everything I know:

The year that Doranne was teaching with Patrick and myself, she was ill almost constantly. She missed classes, went to the doctor constantly, and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. The following year she was a little worse, but continued to drive herself relentlessly, teaching classes and pushing, pushing, pushing, getting sick and getting better and getting sick again. This year she was teaching with Ernestine Kimbro ("Shakespeare's Women" -- a very Doranne topic, don't you think?) and was finally diagnosed with small-cell lung and esphageal cancer (I think) in early May. Because of its location and the size of the tumor (2" by 4"), it was deemed inoperable. She completed a heavy first round of chemotherapy by mid-June, which made her lose weight (and as you know, she had absolutely no weight to lose!!) and lose patches of hair. I think she weighed about 95 pounds. She started to recover over the past month, and last Monday she went in to the doctor to see if she was ready to take on a second round of chemo. She was looking good and feeling somewhat healthier, so they said she was good to go. Then Terry Setter went over on Wednesday to help her with her finances to see if she could retire now (I think this is what was happening; I haven't talked to Terry so I'm unsure of the facts). She developed difficulty breathing and was rushed to the hospital Weds night, and we were all unsure whether she would even survive the night. On Thursday morning the 12th she passed away at about 10:30 am. And I actually sent out the message to the Ireland program listserve about five hours before there was an official announcement from the college on e-mail.

Unfortunately, the college has decided to honor Doranne's wishes and not hold a memorial service. I feel quite strongly that memorials are for the living. So when I die, hey! I want the memorial service, press release, Irish-language lament, flowers outside my office door, etc. I suspect that the arts faculty will hold a silent meditation for her or something, but there will be nothing official for her by the college. And that's a shame.
Love, Sean

I just found out from Alisha (lishwitch) that doranne Crable died the morning of the 12th from cancer.  I know that several of you studied under her or at least worked with her.  If anyone wants to talk about it, feel free to call me.  She was essentric, unique, and bizzarre.  Our world is lacking without her.  I ask everyone who reads this to stand up and take one very slow step back, mouth agape, and exhale...  Goodbye doranne.

Sorry to disappoint anyone who had their hopes up, but I'm not going to Seattle today.  I feel a bit too worn out to go up for a night and come back to work on Monday afternoon.  I have an unfinished brightwork project I want to work on and the Two Gallants are playing the old K Records hall, so I'm gonna have to postpone my Seattle trip for a week or two.  I still love you, I just don't have much travel energy these days.
